Stretching from just southwest of Flagstaff to the White Mountains of eastern Arizona, the Mogollon Rim [map] marks the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau in Arizona. The long escarpment, thousands of feet high in some areas, extends for nearly 200 miles across central Arizona. Average elevation of this undulating rim and plateau country is about 7000 feet. |

Mount Graham |
Summer 1989 |
Humphreys Peak near Flagstaff may be Arizona's highest point, and the White Mountains in eastern Arizona may be the most extensive range of high peaks in the state, no mountain surpasses Mount Graham for sheer massiveness and prominence. Mount Graham looms an astounding 6,320 feet above its defining saddle. As viewed from Safford, which sits below 3,000 feet elevation, the differential is closer to 7,000 vertical feet. The Pinaleno Mountains, which this range is named, offers a wonderful respite from the summer heat and numerous camping, fishing and hiking possibilities. |

The Four Peaks are a central Arizona landmark, drawing the eye and capturing the imagination. One glance and you can't help wondering what it's like up there on that ragged ridgeline. Why not drive up and have a look? Yes, a road - narrow here, steep there, rough and rocky everywhere - leads up and over the range, just north of the peaks themselves. It's a rough drive, but the vistas make it worthwhile |
